International School in Schifflange

Luxembourg’s population continues to grow and more schools need to be added. For this reason, the coalition agreement provides for three additional public European Schools, in order to expand the international school system, particularly in and around Esch-sur-Alzette. So far, there are already six such institutions in Clervaux, Mersch, Junglinster, Luxembourg City, Differdange and Mondorf-les-Bains.

The new accredited European School, which will be built at Op de Fléierchen in Schifflange, will offer multilingual and multicultural education and prepare pupils for the European Baccalaureate, which is recognised in the EU. Initially, French and English sections are planned. Luxembourgish, however, will remain compulsory and will also serve as the language of integration.

The school will consist of a temporary primary section and a secondary section. The primary section is later expected to move entirely to the Victor Hugo site in Esch-sur-Alzette, while the secondary section will remain in Schifflange. In the long term, around 500 pupils are expected in the primary section and around 1,000 pupils in the secondary section.

The secondary school will expand the offer of public European Schools. The new school is expected to be ready for the 2031/2032 school year and will also be free and open to everyone. The site covers around three hectares. The municipality of Schifflange is making the land available but will remain the owner of the property.

Bill 8702 was passed in the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.
