Well enough to leave hospital, but not yet ready to return home? With the “Out of Hospital” pilot project, Minister for Family Affairs Max Hahn is introducing a scheme that offers those affected time, security and tailored support.
A hospital stay can fundamentally change an older person’s daily life. From 1 October 2026, people whose health has stabilised will be able to stay temporarily in a supported residential setting. There, they can recover, regain greater independence and prepare for their next steps. The aim is to return home or, where this is not possible, to make a well-planned move into a suitable residential care facility.
Stays are limited to 8 weeks and may be extended to 12 weeks in justified cases. Participating facilities work closely with a hospital to ensure continued medical follow-up and appropriate support. Residents contribute a maximum of €75 per day.
Initially, 36 beds will be available across four facilities in Eischen, Clervaux, Niederkorn and Junglinster. Applications have already been submitted for a further 30 beds, and other facilities can join as the project progresses. The scheme also aims to reduce unnecessarily prolonged hospital stays and avoidable readmissions.
After three years, an evaluation will assess whether the scheme meets the needs of those using it and has proved effective in practice.
