At the national congress of the Democratic Party on Sunday, 7 June 2026 in Bertrange, democratic values took centre stage. Party president Carole Hartmann emphasized that democracy would not be left to those who talk it down without taking responsibility themselves.
“We don’t spread fear, but provide security.
We don’t polarize, but bring people together.
We don’t look back nostalgically, but move forward with values.”

In the search for consensus, Hartmann said, people do not always have to think alike, but they must find solutions together. Nor should every conflict be avoided. Rather, a democratic society must be able to face and work through conflicts together. In her speech, Hartmann also quoted an Irish mayor who, during his visit to Luxembourg, had told her the following:
“What impressed me most here is that people come together who are very different. Different generations, different backgrounds, different cultures, different convictions. People find common ground, and everyone is welcome here.”
