DP MP Gusty Graas is convinced that the government will react swiftly and efficiently to repatriate the nearly 600 Luxembourgers affected by the consequences of the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Following the government’s statement in the Chamber of Deputies on the situation in the Middle East, the president of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs warned this Tuesday of the risk of a wider regional escalation that these attacks, carried out without a United Nations mandate, could trigger. The Iranian retaliatory strikes, which have already affected the EU member state of Cyprus, would appear to confirm this danger.
The European Union and its NATO member states now face the delicate question of how they should position themselves in this conflict. The first economic consequences, such as rising oil and gas prices, are already being felt.
Gusty Graas calls for a more active role from the European Union, which should focus primarily on diplomacy and de-escalation. Europe could act as a bridge-builder in this situation. However, this would require a common line, which unfortunately is currently lacking. The Democratic Party nevertheless expresses its solidarity with the countries in the region that have been attacked and calls on Iran to immediately cease its attacks.
According to the DP’s spokesperson on foreign affairs, the conflict should give serious cause for concern and once again confirms that the United States no longer respects international law and seeks to replace it with the law of the strongest.
