DP MP Gusty Graas is convinced that the government will respond quickly and effectively to repatriate the nearly 600 Luxembourgers affected by the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East.
Following the government’s statement in the Chamber of Deputies on the situation in the Middle East, the President of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee warned this Tuesday about the risk of a wider regional conflagration, signalled by the attacks carried out without a UN mandate and by Iran’s retaliatory strikes, which have already affected the EU member state of Cyprus.
The European Union and its NATO allies now face the delicate question of how to position themselves in this conflict. The first economic consequences, such as rising oil and gas prices, are already being felt.
Gusty Graas calls for a more active role from the European Union, which should focus primarily on diplomacy and de-escalation. Europe could act as a bridge-builder in this situation. However, this would require a common line, which unfortunately is currently lacking. The Democratic Party nevertheless expresses its solidarity with the countries in the region that have been attacked and calls on Iran to immediately cease its attacks.
This conflict should be a serious cause for concern and appears to show that the United States no longer respects international law, which is increasingly being replaced at the global level by the law of the strongest, according to the DP’s spokesperson on foreign affairs.
