Responsibility and solidarity, more than ever

Congress of the Northern District on Wednesday, 6 May 2026 at Clervaux Castle: Speaking to a full room, president Mike Poiré underlined that the DP has always been the party of social-liberal values. A party that stands for freedom, tolerance and responsibility, and that cares deeply about economic and social progress. The common thread running through DP policy, he said, is solidarity, by which all decisions must be guided. Looking ahead to the 2028 parliamentary elections, the aim in the North is to retain the two seats, and, if possible, to increase that number.

It is all those who represent us in their municipalities who strengthen exchange and cohesion within the party, in a grassroots democratic way. They help us inspire and support one another, and shape our political programme. Only together are we strong.

Northern MP André Bauler also addressed the social dimension of politics, including the fight against poverty. Poverty, he said, is not a mere statistic, but a very real living situation in which this government is providing targeted and unbureaucratic support to the citizens affected. It is essential for politics to respond to people’s needs on the ground, said the Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies – through pragmatic work of the kind carried out, in particular, in the municipalities where DP representatives hold responsibility.

The DP is indeed the party that is there when it matters, MP Marc Hansen also said: not with empty slogans, but with real work. This is becoming evident once again in the context of the Tripartite, where one would need negotiating skills. Something Xavier Bettel had always mastered brilliantly. A talent that was needed again now, just like taking responsibility.

Minister for Culture and Tourism Eric Thill also recalled the responsibility of politics, especially in times of crisis. In this context, he highlighted Minister for the Economy and Energy Lex Delles’s initiative Simple, fast, renewable, which provides people with concrete support during the energy crisis and strengthens their purchasing power. It remains important, he said, to continue relying on the Luxembourg model, especially in view of the challenges in Iran or Ukraine, on which Luxembourg has no direct influence. In such times, culture plays a very important role in strengthening cohesion across our society as a whole. This is also the purpose of the first action plan for Accès à la Culture, which brings culture closer to everyone who wishes to access it.

In conclusion, Carole Hartmann emphasised that strong social policy also requires a strong economy. Especially in more difficult times, it is vital to ensure that the economy remains competitive, for example in order to finance adequate housing, social and education policies. The party president also recalled the DP’s European DNA. As a small country, Luxembourg is only strong if Europe is strong too. The crises we are currently facing show this once again, very, very clearly.
